ARCHERY BASICS
If you’ve tried archery or want to try it, you’ll be happy to know that it’s very easy to shoot your first arrow. Daily struggles seem to melt away when you have a bow in your hands because archery requires 100 percent of your concentration. Read up on our basics for this new stress-relieving skillset.
Archery 101
You won’t run laps or break a heavy sweat shooting archery, but you should still dress appropriately. Wear closed-toed shoes like sneakers and for this outdoor activity dress for the weather but avoid baggy clothes that can catch the bowstring. If you have long hair, wear it in a ponytail, or bun, or simply pull it away from your face. You’ll draw the bowstring back to your face, and you don’t want it to catch your hair when releasing the arrow.
Once you’ve tried archery, you’ll be hooked and want to make it part of your life.

10 Reasons why Archery is the best sport ever
1. It is a lifetime sport
It is not only for the children or younger generation. You can enter into this sport even at a later stage in your life. People compete at the Nationals in their 70s and 80s, and adults of all ages compete in national and international Senior Game tournaments.
2. You can enjoy it in any kind of weather
It is a year-round sport and can be played indoors or outdoors.
3. You can compete in tournaments if you like
You can compete on local, provincial or national levels.
4. Strictly recreational – is also okay
If you are not the competitive type, archery is still great as simply a recreational activity. It lets you go at your own pace, and you don’t have to keep score. You can enjoy it for exercise, or just for fun at Crywolf Outdoor with friends.
5. You can try out for the Olympics or Paralympics
If you have an Olympic or Paralympic dream, this is the sport to take on. It might take hundreds of thousands of practice arrows, serious dedication, and natural talent, but the potential is there!
6. You can play multiple games
If shooting multicoloured bulls-eye targets across a field isn’t your thing, that’s okay. It has games for everyone. 3D archery lets you shoot at three-dimensional foam animals in a wooded course, while field archery lets you shoot indoors or outdoors at paper targets.
7. You can make a fashion statement
Teams wear colourful uniforms, fabulous hats, or fancy manicures. Almost every archer wear “quiver candy” – unique items that clip onto the quivers that hold their arrows. People go with colour themes for all their gear, and even custom paint their bows. Archery is fashion forward.
8. It builds confidence
It truly builds confidence quickly. The feeling of shooting a bow and accomplishing your goal – whether it’s drilling a bull’s eye or executing a great shot – helps you build self-esteem and enjoy a sense of accomplishment. Archery is also great for improving focus, patience and even math skills.
9. Archery friends are best friends
Archery is a universal language. Whether you catch up at club or league night or compete in tournaments, friends you make in this sport can become lifelong buddies. Many of the top archers have shot together on teams for years, and they’ve made new friends from countries worldwide.
10. It is even a way to source food
If you’re looking for an ethical way to source food, consider bowhunting. Competitive and recreational archery go hand-in-hand with bowhunting: by practicing year-round, those who bowhunt can ensure safe, ethical shots during the hunting season.
Archery offers many mental and physical benefits
It makes you set aside time to do nothing but focus on a target. When you’re drawing your bow, everything else fades into the background. All that matters is your fingers on the bowstring and your eye on the 10-ring. Archery balances mind and body.
Archery even increases arthritis pain for some people through consistent practice and muscle memory. It also improves hand0eye coordination.
Archers with post-traumatic stress disorder often find relief by practicing, due to its requirement of intense focus. It quiets the mind and helps you focus on something you can control.
